No doubt you want to market your products, services and employment opportunities to the college market. You also understand the problems with reaching the college market.
College newspapers, from the dailies that run like city newspapers to the “once-per-mothers” that many small colleges publish, are excellent vehicles to reach college students.
Although they look like newspapers, they target like magazines by circulating to a well-defined group of potential customers (and candidates).
However, most college publications are staffed by unpaid (or low paid) students. The experiences lean heavily on journalism and business issues can sometimes take a back seat. Some newspapers do not take advertising because they are totally funded by the college. A college newspaper that accepts advertising implies that it is willing to engage in a relationship with a business that may help the business increase sales (through promotion of its product, service, etc.).
Your quest as an advertiser is to utilize this medium without getting caught up in the time-consuming tasks of gathering information to plan, getting proof-of-insertion and paying each college. It is also your agency’s concern. Many do not place into college newspapers themselves, choosing to use a national or regional ad placement firm. |
